"Player of the Season" winners announced

POTS2023

The 2022/2023 season was one of highs and lows. A serie of penalty kicks removed from a European semi-final, and great moments interspersed with great disappointments in the Jupiler Pro League. The RSCA Women became champions, and with the Futures, a new generation of purple and white talents showed themselves to the outside world for the first time in the Challenger Pro League

Like every season, we looked for the players and female player who added colour to this season. Fans could cast their votes in three categories:

  • Player of the Season
  • Young Player of the Season
  • Female Player of the Season

"Player of the Season" : Bart Verbruggen

The votes have been counted and none other than Bart Verbruggen was voted by you as our Player of the Season. With 36% of the votes, he became the obvious number 1 in the poll. In this way, he leaves Zeno Debast (29% of the votes) and Jan Vertonghen (19% of the votes) behind. Talk about a nice top three.

Bart came between the posts in the middle of the season and immediately impressed. In barely 17 Jupiler Pro League games, he managed to convince you of his class. His saves at crucial moments were clearly appreciated. He also seized his moment in the Croky Cup, during the penalty shoot-out against Lierse he gave Sporting the victory and advanced to the next round. But for Bart, the highlights of the season undoubtedly came from the Conference League parcours. During the penalty series against Ludogorets at the Lotto Park, he crowned himself match-winner by saving three consecutive penalties. Also at Villarreal, in the next round of the Conference League, the Dutch goalie was outstanding. Bart excelled there with one save after another. With the final apotheosis, the victory at Villarreal.

Congratulations on the Player of the Season award, Bart. A nice recognition for all your achievements during last season.

"Female Player of the Season" : Sarah Wijnants

At the top of the RSCA Women standings, it was very close. In the end, it was Sarah Wijnants (21%) who walked away with the title of Female Player of the Season. She finished just above Marie Minnaert (19%) and Laura De Neve (13%).

For Sarah, it was her fifth season at Sporting and she was able win her fifth title in a row. In addition, her statistics did not lie. With 15 goals and 18 assists, she had an important part in the RSCA Women's success this season.

Congratulations on the award of Female Player of the Season, Sarah.

"Young Player of the Season" : Lucas Stassin

What a season for the RSCA Futures. The Young Mauves got the chance to showcase themselves in the Challenger Pro League for the first time ever. They made it to the Promotion Play-offs and eventually finished the season in 6th place.

Also at the RSCA Futures, there was a search for the player of the year, the Young Player of the Season. That award went to Lucas Stassin. He made it ahead of Théo Leoni and Noah Sadiki. Lucas scored 15 goals in the Challenger Pro League, placing him in the top three in the top scorer standings.

Congratulations Lucas on the award of Young Player of the Season.
