Born on 28 October 1956 in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, Franky Vercauteren celebrates his 70th birthday today. Recently inducted into the Pro League Hall of Fame, Franky has left an indelible mark on the history of the Mauves, as well as on that of the Belgian Red Devils.
A true Brussels native, Franky Vercauteren made his league debut for RSCA at the age of 19, on 21 September 1975. He then had to wait six months, until the spring of 1976, for another opportunity, which came during a derby away to RWDM. It was a particularly special match for Franky, as his father and the rest of his family had always been passionate supporters of Daring. Even so, his father had never discouraged him from signing up with Sporting as a young boy. The match would prove to be a memorable one. Sporting won 0-2, with Franky scoring his very first goal for the first team and firmly establishing himself at the club.
The Petit Prince du Parc Astrid went on to make no fewer than 490 appearances for Sporting, scoring 112 goals and delivering countless magical, curling crosses that became his trademark. The iconic winger won four league titles (1981, 1985, 1986 and 1987, followed by two more as a coach in 2006 and 2007), one Belgian Cup (1976), two European Cup Winners’ Cups (1976 and 1978), one UEFA Cup (1983) and two European Super Cups (1976 and 1978). Franky Vercauteren was one of the key architects of Sporting’s European triumphs. An absolute icon with an outstanding honours list, he helped shape the history and glory of the Mauves.
Some players make history. Legends embody their club. Happy birthday, Franky.
