On Monday, RSC Anderlecht announced that Antoine Sibierski has become the club’s new sporting director. The 51-year-old Frenchman will head the sports department of the Mauves. Two days after his appointment, Sibierski has been officially introduced to the press. Watch Antoine Sibierski’s press conference.
Kenneth Bornauw, CEO of RSC Anderlecht, opened the press conference. He explained in detail the criteria used in the search for a new sporting director. “We are very pleased to present Antoine today. In recent months, we conducted a thorough analysis of what is needed to strengthen our sporting department.” This was based on five criteria.
“First and foremost: football DNA. It had to be someone with experience at the highest level.” Sibierski built a strong career as a player in France and later moved to clubs such as Manchester City and Newcastle United. “Second: sporting leadership. Antoine is someone who can stay close to the players and staff. We were looking for ‘un homme de terrain’. Third: someone with proven expertise in building a competitive and balanced squad.” French Ligue 2 side Troyes AC, where Sibierski most recently worked as sporting director, secured the title last weekend.
“Fourth: someone who pays attention to the development of homegrown talent. That is essential at a club like RSCA, and he will work closely with Tim Borguet on this. And finally, network: having a strong international network, preferably in the top five European leagues. That’s how we arrived at Antoine, one of the few candidates who combines all these qualities. From the first conversation, he showed affinity with the club and a genuine interest in our project. His profile and leadership also perfectly match the phase RSC Anderlecht is currently in. He will be responsible for all professional teams.”
Antoine Sibierski addressed the press with his first remarks. “I would like to thank you for allowing me to speak in French. Communication is always a challenge, and it helps that I can speak my mother tongue.” The Frenchman then outlined his ambitions at Anderlecht. “The work I will carry out must match the ambition and prestige of the club. We want to play dominant football, both in and out of possession. I want all our teams to play with impeccable mentality, with values such as structure, discipline and work ethic. And I want to see young players progress to the first team. My ambitions fully align with those of the club.”
Sibierski does not yet wish to comment on the current state of the team or the coach. “My approach must be careful and well thought-out. I am still in the observation phase. It would be inappropriate, and simply wrong, to draw conclusions already. Moreover, we are fourth in the league, a position we must maintain, and we are in the cup final.” Important matches are still to come, the new sporting director knows. “This is an important period for the club. Our focus is therefore mainly on the upcoming matches.”
The 51-year-old Frenchman grew up in Lille, just across the Belgian border. “I remember my parents had a second television that received RTBF. As a five- or six-year-old, I watched football matches in black and white, including Anderlecht’s European games.” In youth competitions, Sibierski also often faced teams from Neerpede. “Those were always difficult matches for us.”
“For me, Anderlecht has always been the club in Belgium. Players that immediately come to mind are Scifo, Vercauteren, Albert, Degryse, Nilis. And of course Paul Van Himst, who is from my father’s generation. Yesterday, on my first day, I asked if I could meet Van Himst, because he embodies what RSC Anderlecht is. He helped shape this club. The current generation may be quick to forget the club’s past. It is the responsibility of everyone within the club to ensure that history is not lost. Board members, staff, players - we are ultimately just passing through. But let’s make it a beautiful chapter.”

Hij lichtte uitvoerig toe op basis van welke criteria gezocht werd naar een nieuwe sportief directeur. “We zijn heel verheugd om Antoine vandaag voor te stellen. De afgelopen maanden maakten we een grondige analyse van wat er nodig is om om onze sportieve cel te versterken.” Dat gebeurde op basis van vijf criteria.
“Eerst en vooral: voetbal-DNA. Het moest iemand zijn met ervaring op het hoogste niveau.” Sibierski bouwde een mooie carrière uit als speler in Frankrijk en trok nadien naar onder meer Manchester City en Newcastle United. “Twee: sportief leiderschap. Antoine is iemand die dicht bij de spelersgroep en de staf kan staan. We zochten “un homme de terrain”. Drie: iemand met bewezen expertise in het samenstellen van een competitieve en evenwichtige kern.” De Franse tweedeklasser Troyes AC, waar Sibierski tot voor kort aan de slag was als sportief directeur, speelde afgelopen weekend kampioen.
“Vier: iemand die aandacht heeft voor de doorstroming van eigen talent. Dat is vanzelfsprekend bij een club zoals RSCA en hij zal daarvoor nauw samenwerken met Tim Borguet. En het laatste netwerk: bezitten over een sterk internationaal netwerk, bij voorkeur in de G5-competities. Zo kwamen we uit bij Antoine, die als een van enige kandidaten al deze kwaliteiten combineert. Vanaf het eerste gesprek toonde hij affectie met de club en een oprechte interesse in ons project. Zijn profiel en zijn leiderschap sluiten ook perfect aan bij de levensfase waar RSC Anderlecht in zit. Hij wordt verantwoordelijk voor alle professionele teams.”
Antoine Sibierski richtte zich met zijn eerste woorden tot de aanwezige pers. “Ik wil jullie bedanken dat ik me in het Frans mag uitdrukken. Communicatie is altijd een moeilijke oefening en het helpt dat ik mijn moedertaal kan spreken.” Vervolgens sprak de Fransman zich uit over zijn ambities bij paars-wit. “Het werk dat ik zal verrichten moet aan de ambitie en het prestige van de club voldoen. We willen dominant voetbal brengen, zowel aan de bal als zonder de bal. Ik wil dat al onze ploegen met onberispelijke mentaliteit spelen, met waarden zoals structuur, discipline en werkethiek. En ik wil jeugdspelers zien doorstromen naar de eerste ploeg.” Mijn ambities matchen dan ook volledig met die van de club.”
Over de huidige situatie van de ploeg en de coach wil Sibierski zich nog niet uitspreken. “Mijn aanpak moet delicaat en weldoordacht zijn. Ik zit nog steeds in de fase waarin ik aan het observeren ben. Het zou dan ook ongepast, en gewoonweg verkeerd, zijn om nu al conclusies te trekken. Bovendien staan we vierde in de competitie, een positie die we moeten behouden, en we staan in de bekerfinale.” Er volgen nog belangrijke wedstrijden, weet ook de nieuwe sportief directeur. “Dit wordt een belangrijke periode voor de club. We focussen ons dan ook vooral op de komende matchen.”
De 51-jarige Fransman groeide op in Rijsel, net over de grens met België. “Ik herinner me dat mijn ouders een tweede televisie hadden die RTBF uitzond. Daarop keek ik als vijf-, zesjarige jongen in het zwart-wit naar voetbalwedstrijden, ook naar wedstrijden van RSC Anderlecht in Europa.” Ook in de jeugdreeksen nam Sibierski het vaak op tegen de jeugdploegen van Neerpede. “Dat waren steeds lastige wedstrijden voor ons.”
“Voor mij is Anderlecht altijd dé club in België geweest. Spelers die dan meteen in me opkomen zijn Scifo, Vercauteren, Albert, Degryse, Nilis. En natuurlijk Paul Van Himst, die van de generatie is van mijn vader. Gisteren, op mijn eerste dag, heb ik gevraagd om Van Himst te kunnen ontmoeten want hij is de verpersoonlijking van wat RSC Anderlecht is. Hij heeft deze club mee vormgegeven. De huidige generatie is misschien snel geneigd om het verleden van de club te vergeten. Het is de verantwoordelijkheid van iedereen binnen de club om ervoor te zorgen dat die geschiedenis niet verloren gaat. Bestuursleden, staf, spelers - we zijn tenslotte maar passanten bij de club. Maar laten we er vooral een mooie passage van maken.”
