On 15 June 2024, the football world stood still for a moment. Matija Sarkic, just 26 years old, passed away unexpectedly. The Montenegrin goalkeeper from Millwall came through the youth ranks at Anderlecht before continuing his career in England. The British School of Brussels, where Matija studied, organised a tournament on 4 and 5 April with his former clubs, paying tribute to the late student and goalkeeper.
From 2005 to 2015, Matija Sarkic played at Neerpede. The young keeper then moved to Aston Villa, where he was loaned out several times. He also became Montenegro’s first-choice goalkeeper. In his last international match for Montenegro, on 5 June against Belgium, he was even named man of the match. Just ten days later, Matija tragically passed away while on holiday with friends — a huge shock to the entire football world.
“Matija was always positive and tried to bring a good mood, even in tough times,” said Youri Tielemans. “Always up for anything you needed and caring for others.” Orel Mangala, who played one age group below Matija at Neerpede, also shares only fond memories. “He was a great goalkeeper but also a superb person. Every time I saw him at football or at school it was only smiles and jokes.” After the match against Montenegro, Orel exchanged shirts with his former teammate. “It is a very precious memento for me, part of someone I will always carry in my heart.”
Matija made a lasting impression with his eternal enthusiasm — also at The British School of Brussels, the international school in Tervuren where he studied. That’s why the school launched a tournament featuring his former clubs, with RSCA taking part as well. “This tournament is a celebration of life, of friendship, and of the unifying power of sport,” said James Penstone, headmaster and CEO of the school. “We remember Matija as a cheerful, open, and kind young man who would have wanted us to cherish these days, filled with joy and warm smiles.”
On the weekend of 4 and 5 April, Matija’s life and legacy were celebrated, together with his family, by embracing the joy of the game he loved so dearly.
