On Tuesday, June 17, we celebrate the 80th birthday of Eddy Merckx, a true monument of Belgian sport and a global icon in the world of cycling. The Cannibal remains an undisputed reference in sport.
The greatest rider of all time is turning 80. Over the course of his career, Eddy collected no fewer than 525 victories, five Tour de France titles, five Giro d’Italia wins, one Vuelta, and three World Championships. He also broke the prestigious hour record — the bike he used is on display at the Eddy Merckx metrostation, located in the municipality of… Anderlecht.
Anderlecht and football are Eddy’s other great passions. For many years, he has been a devoted supporter, often seen alongside his close friend Paul Van Himst in the stands of the Astrid Park. He even wore our colours with the veteran's team, alongside Georges Heylens, Jean Plaskie, and Jean Cornelis.
Whether at the stadium or in front of the TV, he never misses a match and never hides his love for his favourite club. Eddy perfectly embodies the values of our club. In both good times and bad: Eddy Merckx remains a true RSCA supporter — loyal and demanding.
There’s no doubt that a champion like him will blow out all 80 candles in a single breath. Congratulations, Eddy.
