Three Sporting Girls will be heading to the European Championship this summer. Laura Deloose, Tine De Caigny and Sarah Wijnants are part of the squad selected by head coach Elísabet Gunnarsdóttir. Player of the Season Luna Vanzeir and recent signing Nia Elyn are on the Red Flames’ reserve list.
The Euros in Switzerland is kicking off on July 2. The Belgian women have been drawn into a tough group and will start their campaign with a clash against Italy. That match will be played on July 3 at 6 PM in Sion. They will then face Spain (July 7) and Portugal (July 11).
So, three RSCA Women players will definitely be travelling to Switzerland. Laura Deloose is a regular at the heart of the defence and recently earned her 100th cap against England. She’s now up to 103, placing her seventh on the all-time list of most international appearances for the Red Flames.
Also among the elite players with over 100 caps is Tine De Caigny. She has already earned 107 caps, putting her in fifth place. The 28-year-old midfielder from RSCA Women will also be present in Switzerland.
Finally, Sarah Wijnants has also been called up by head coach Elísabet Gunnarsdóttir for the final tournament. It’s a deserved reward for her strong performances with Sporting this season. Sarah was the assist queen of the Lotto Super League with 13 assists, and she also scored 9 goals.
Two more Sporting Girls are on the national team’s reserve list. Luna Vanzeir, recently voted RSCA Women’s Player of the Season by the fans, still has a chance of being selected. The same goes for Nia Elyn, who recently made the move from KAA Gent to the capital.
Good luck, Sporting Girls.
