On the final matchday of the Champions’ Play-offs, Sporting travelled to Limburg. After a brilliant first-half goal by Yari Verschaeren, Zakaria El Ouahdi decided the match in KRC Genk’s favor with two goals. The Mauves finish the season in fourth place.
Under a sunny sky in the Cegeka Arena, the first chance of the match went to the home team. Tolu Arokodare laid the ball off to Kos Karetsas, whose long-range effort was easily caught by Colin Coosemans. Less than a minute later, Tristan Degreef produced the Mauves’ first threat with a similar shot. A little after the opening quarter, Sporting broke the deadlock. Mario Stroeykens passed to Yari Verschaeren, who got past his defender with a clever feint and curled the ball into the far corner. Just two minutes later, Zakaria El Ouahdi equalized. Around the half-hour mark, the Moroccan had the chance to completely turn the game around, but one-on-one with Coosemans, he failed to keep his cool. Aside from long shots by Verschaeren and Karetsas, there were no major chances before halftime. The teams went into the break level.
Sporting came out of the dressing room poorly. Just five minutes into the second half, the Limburgers took the lead again, once more through Zakaria El Ouahdi. Besnik Hasi responded by bringing on Thorgan Hazard, ending Tristan Degreef’s game. Soon after, Ali Maamar had a huge opportunity to equalize but hit the underside of the bar, and the ball bounced back into play. With over twenty minutes left, Luis Vázquez also had the equalizer at his feet but shot Hazard’s excellent cross just wide. That was his last action before being replaced by Kasper Dolberg. Theo Leoni and Ibrahima Kanaté also came on. Leander Dendoncker volleyed over from a corner, and a shot from Kasper Dolberg was caught by Mike Penders, but it was Yari Verschaeren who came closest to 2-2, narrowly missing the target. The score remained 2-1 in Limburg. The Mauves thus finish the season in fourth place.
