Superleague Formula

Superleague Formula (SF) is a new world championship, which started in 2008. It is a mix of two of the world’s most popular sports: football and racing.
The new concept came into being in August 2008, with 18 teams racing in the colours of top football team from all around the world. Rivals on the football field have become rivals on several of the world’s best racetracks. All of the cars and motors are identical, as a result of which the pilot’s talent and competence are emphasized.
The purpose is to combine the passion of football with the excitement of racing. By combining these two, a unique mix of entertainment, passion, fair play and joy has been created: the beautiful race !
Qualifying Races
On Saturday, the qualifying races will take place, and free testing is also possible.
For the qualifying races, the teams will be assigned to group A or B by lot. Both groups have 15 minutes to drive a lap as fast as possible. The four fastest cars from both sessions (A and B), qualify for the quarterfinals. These eight cars then take on each other in a head-to-head format. They enter the track two by two - the distance between them is fixed - and the fastest of two qualifies for the semifinals. There, too, the head-to-head system will be applied in order to determine which two teams will take on each other in the final. The pilot who drives the fastest time during that final, starts in pole position during the first race on Sunday.
Races
On Sunday, the races will take place, i.e. two ’45-minute races’: 44 minutes and 1 lap. When the 44 minutes are over and the leader finishes, he has one more round to go. The purpose of this format is to bring the race as close as possible to one half in football. In the second race, the ‘reverse grid’ system will be applied. That is, the winner of the first race will start last in race 2.
In 2009, a third race was introduced, the so-called super final, in which the 3 best teams of both races take on each other. Since 2010 it is also possible to gain extra championship points during this special six-car 'shoot-out'.
