RSC Anderlecht beat Beerschot with smallest difference

RSC Anderlecht took on Beerschot AC in the first home match of the new Jupiler Pro League season. The team from Brussels beat their opponent with the smallest difference (1-0) thanks to a goal by Kanu in the first half.

There was not much excitement at the start of the match. The first real scoring opportunity only went in after ten minutes of play, but Marcin Wasilewski’s header just went long and, somewhat later on, Guillaume Gillet was not able to score after a centre by Behrang Safari. Halfway through the first half, the home team did score when Kanu perfectly finished off a one-two with Milan Jovanovic. After thirty minutes, Tom De Sutter almost doubled the score, he took a swing on a cross by Milan Jovanovic, but was stopped by a defender. Beerschot were not able to do much in return in the entire first half.

Beerschot did try in the second half, but Adrie Koster’s team did not create any real scoring opportunities. The Purple & White were closest to scoring in the final stages of the match, but Dieumerci Mbokani did not manage to score. First he was blocked by a defender and, ten minutes before the end, his header – after a free kick by Lucas Biglia – hit the post. Only a few minutes later, a penalty was awarded to Anderlecht after Dieumerci Mbokani had been taken down in the box. Guillaume Gillet, however, hit the post. During injury time substitute Oleksandr Iakovenko’s hard shot was averted, as a result of which Anderlecht won 1-0 after 90 minutes of play, their first three points of the season.
