SF 2010 : Davide Rigon wins title for RSC Anderlecht !

RSC Anderlecht have won the Superleague Formula 2010! Davide Rigon, RSCA’s Italian pilot, fended off an ultimate attack by Craig Dolby and Tottenham in a really exciting final on the Spanish Circuito de Navarra and took the title! Just two points separate winner Davide Rigon (699 points) and first pursuer Craig Dolby (697 points). Basel and Max Wissel (667 points) finished third.

After nice qualifications on Saturday, Rigon started race 1 from pole position. The Italian raced well and finished second behind John Martin and Beijing Guoan. Craig Dolby (Tottenham), however, did not throw in the towel and pushed Rigon to the edge. The Briton went from fifth to third position, right behind Anderlecht and kept the pressure on RSCA. Rigon’s three other rivals did not really threaten him in race 1. Wissel (Basel) finished sixth, Hanley (Olympiacos) twelfth and Buurman (Milan) was already eliminated from the race for the title after having finished seventh in race 1.

Results race 1 :

Dolby, who raced for RSC Anderlecht in 2008, was determined to take the title and attacked. After having started 16th, he reached 4th (!) position, whereas Davide Rigon got into trouble along the way. Because of an unintentional touch by Beijing, Rigon’s car went off the track and even came to a halt. Rigon remained calm, restarted and returned to the track. Thanks to a good pit stop by Azerti, among other things, Rigon was able to fight back, but he only reached 11th place. Like that, Dolby turned his 24-point arrears into one of only 4 points...

Results race 2 :

That 11th position was enough for Rigon to reach the Super Final, but the result of Dolby’s nice comeback was that RSC Anderlecht was not mathematically sure of the title yet with only a 4-point lead over Tottenham... In the Super Final, there were still six points to be earned, that is. The Briton immediately took the lead in the final, whereas Rigon was only fifth. There was a lot of suspense and only two laps before the end John Martin and Beijing took Dolby’s first place, after which Rigon passed Bordeaux, became fourth and took the title with 699 points, only 2 more than Tottenham Hotspur.

Results race 3:

"This is really amazing. It wasn’t easy taking the title here this weekend. The beginning of the season was difficult too, but the Azerti team have worked so hard and this title is the result", Davide Rigon said. "We were also a little bit in luck today. In the second race - when I was passing Tottenham - I was hit by Beijing and my engine failed. At that moment, things were looking bad for us. I put the car in reverse and, all of a sudden, the engine restarted. It was really scary!" For Rigon it is the second time that he wins the championship. "I would like to thank RSC Anderlecht, it was really amazing driving for them. I also want to thank the Azerti team, they have supported me the entire season and have done everything within their power to allow me to race in the best circumstances possible."

"I am really happy", Azerti’s Wim Coekelbergs said. "The team have delivered some perfect work and Davide has finished the job by taking the title this weekend. Amazing!"

This title is the first for RSC Anderlecht and Wim Coekelbergs’ Belgian Azerti team in the Superleague Formula. For Davide Rigon this is his 2nd title, after a successful debut year in 2008.

RSC Anderlecht would like to congratulate Davide Rigon and the Azerti team with their SF title !
