RSCA will play their first important match of the season tomorrow, Tuesday 27th July 2010. Ariël Jacobs’ team will take on The New Saints FC from Wales as part of the third qualifying round of the Champions League. Underestimating the opponent is out of the question. "There are no small teams", Anderlecht coach Ariël Jacobs said during the press conference. "Everybody deserves respect. The New Saints are a club with many qualities and they also realize that they are only four matches away from competing in the CL, the most important football competition. So be sure that they will be highly motivated."
"TNS always go for it during the full 90 minutes, both physically and mentally, but you know that when you’re facing a British club. They always look for the fastest way to reach their opponent’s goal and are very dangerous when restarting play", the coach realized. "I don’t know whether they were still hoping to qualify after having lost 1-0 on the field of Bohemian, but they blew us all away by winning the second leg 4-0. Especially those three goals during the first twenty minutes of play were impressive. They showed a lot of potential and we have to try and disarm them."
To make it to the Champions League is RSCA’s first goal this season. "The next four matches will be very important for us", Jacobs said. "On Tuesday, we of course want to obtain a good point of departure for the second leg, but football is not an automatic game, you can’t just say that we want to try and finish the job here on Tuesday", he said. "The players are not thinking about that either. We still have to play a second leg after tomorrow and, after that, two very important matches will follow before we can reach our first goal of the season."
The lesson against BATE Borisov - who eliminated Anderlecht from Europe two years ago - is still fresh in the Purple & White memory, although Jacobs does not want to stress that too much. "We have learnt from that bad experience against BATE", Jacobs said, "but we also have positive memories, for example the successes in last year’s Europa League. That nice streak we put down last season should boost our spirits", RSCA’s coach said.
