SF : RSC Anderlecht at top again in Magny-Cours

Less than a week after RSC Anderlecht’s victory in the Dutch Assen, the Superleague Formula teams headed for the French Magny-Cours track during Whitweekend.

During Saturday’s qualifying races, Davide Rigon had finished 3rd in group A, from which the 4 fastest football teams go through. Halfway through the session, however, Sevilla FC’s Marcos Martinez was taken out and home drivers Bourdais and Jousse ignored the yellow flag there to drive their peak times, which were then cancelled by the racing management, as a result of which RSC Anderlecht rose to the top. In the quarterfinals, however, Rigon fell short 0.10 seconds to beat FC Basel’s Max Wissel, after which RSCA had to start race 1 seventh.

During that first race on Sunday, the car, managed by Azerti, started well and immediately went up a few places. A lesser pit stop, however, resulted in a sixth position, but after Walker (Liverpool)’s successful attempt to catch up, RSC Anderlecht finished the race the same way they had started it.

Race 2, then, was a real show, in which a few pilots made mistakes in Magny-Cours’s famous Adelaide U-turn, which follows the long straight part. Home driver Bourdais was one by braking far too late, getting sideways and taking out the Bordeaux car, driven by his compatriot Montagny. Rigon was driving in front of Bourdais at that moment and was able to escape the situation by reacting quickly and in a very precise way. RSC Anderlecht, in the end, finished 3rd after a nice race both by pilot Rigon and the Azerti team, who made the right decisions along the way and delivered a fast pit stop.

For the second Sunday in a row, Anderlecht got to compete in the big super final with 5 laps and, again, RSC Anderlecht started very well. After two turns, Rigon went from 4th to 2nd position, which he would hold on to until the finish. With a victory and a second place in 2 super finals in one week’s time, RSC Anderlecht, Davide Rigon and the Azerti team are definitely part of the Superleague Formula top - Purple-White are currently ranked third. We can now eagerly look forward to the next race, in the Spanish Jarama, on 19th and 20th June.
