2010 World Cup: no success for Sporting’s players

Six Sporting Anderlecht internationals played for their respective national teams last week, but they had little success. Only Victor Bernárdez’ Honduras were able to win, but RSCA’s defender did not play. U21 players Romelu Lukaku and Ondrej Mazuch, however, were able to triumph twice each.

Honduras, Anderlecht defender Victor Bernárdez’s national team, had to play two World Cup qualifying matches. On Saturday 5th September, they beat Trinidad & Tobago 4-1, but, on Wednesday 9th September, Honduras lost 1-0 to Mexico. Bernárdez stayed on the bench for 90 minutes during these two matches. Honduras are currently ranked third in their group, with 13 points - three less than the United States, who are at the top of the league table.

Mbark Boussoufa did play during Morocco’s World Cup qualifying match against Togo, but his team did not get more out of it than a one-all draw. RSCA’s midfielder was replaced after 65 minutes of play. Morocco are currently ranked last in group A.

Red Devils Olivier Deschacht, Davy Schollen and Tom De Sutter were heavily defeated twice. On Saturday 5th September, they lost 5-0 to Spain and, on Wednesday, Armenia beat them 2-1. Olivier Deschacht substituted the injured Jan Vertonghen against Spain after thirty minutes of play. On Wednesday, he played the entire match. Davy Schollen stayed on the bench during botch games and Tom De Sutter (not part of the selection for the match in Spain) replaced Maarten Martens against Armenia after 54 minutes of play. Belgium are currently ranked fourth in their group, with 7 points out of 8 matches, and have been mathematically eliminated for the 2010 World Cup.

Roland Juhasz, too, played two World Cup qualifying matches. Hungary, however, also lost twice. On Saturday, they were defeated by Sweden (2-1) and, on Wednesday, they lost to Portugal (0-1). Juhasz was replaced after 64 minutes in the first match, while he played the entire second game as captain of the Hungarian national team. Hungary are currently ranked fourth in their group, with 13 points out of 8 matches - five less than group leader Denmark.

U21 internationals

Two RSCA players, Ondrej Mazuch (Czech Republic) and Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) played for their national U21 team last week. Both players were successful in two matches.
Ondrej Mazuch, who played the full 90’ in both matches, beat Northern Ireland 2-0 on Friday 4th September and, on Tuesday 8th September, the Czech team defeated Germany (1-2). Like this, the Czech U21 team have reached the top of their group, with a maximum of 12 points out of 4 games.
Romelu Lukaku beat Malta (0-1) with the Belgian U21 team on Friday. Sporting Anderlecht’s 16-year-old striker came in after 64 minutes of play. Two days ago, on Tuesday 8th September, Belgium also beat Slovenia 2-0. Lukaku came in after 71 minutes and scored the 2-0 somewhat later on.
